Privacy, in plain language

What we collect

• Your account (optional). If you sign in to earn points, we store your email address (and, if you use Google, Google's account ID for you), the public display name you pick, when you joined and last visited, and your points, badges, the places you added and the places you voted on. Your email is never shown publicly. Other people only see your display name, points, badges and the places you added (for example “First reported by @name” and your profile page). We don't get your Google password or contacts.
• Places you add. When you add a place, we store the business name, address, type and any note you write, plus the map location we look up for that address. If it's approved, the place details appear on the map, along with your display name if you were signed in. If you add a place without signing in, we also store a scrambled (hashed) random ID that your browser keeps for this site, so you can choose to claim those places if you create an account later on the same device.
• Votes. When you tap “still has it” or “no longer has it,” we store the vote, the place, the date and a hashed identifier (so each person counts once per place; a newer vote replaces an older one). Only vote totals are shown publicly. Your browser also remembers your own vote on your device.
• Anti-spam data. To stop spam and limit how often forms can be used, we store a one-way hashed (scrambled) version of your IP address, not the IP address itself. With place submissions and claims we also store the time and your browser's user-agent string (its name and version). Rate-limit counters are deleted automatically after about a week.
• Listing claims. If you claim a business listing, we store your name, role, business email, and the phone number and message if you give them. These are used only to verify the claim. Moderators can see them, but they are never shown on the site. A verified listing only shows a “Verified by owner” badge.
• Your location (only if you ask). If you tap “Near me,” your browser shares your location with the map on your device so it can center on you. We don't send it to our servers or store it.

We don't use advertising trackers or analytics cookies. The only cookies we set are sign-in cookies: one for your account session if you sign in (plus a short-lived one while Google sign-in is in progress), and one for moderators. Signing out removes your session.

Why we collect it

To run the map: review and publish places, show vote totals, keep out spam and abuse, check that someone claiming a listing really works there, and (if you have an account) keep track of your points, badges and leaderboard spot.

We don't sell your data

We don't sell or rent personal information to anyone, and we don't share it for advertising.

Services that help run the site

• Vercel hosts the website. Like any web host, it handles your requests (including your IP address) to serve pages.
• Neon hosts our database, where accounts, submissions, votes, points, claims and anti-spam counters are stored.
• OpenFreeMap provides the map tiles. Your browser loads tiles directly from their servers as you move the map.
• Geocoders: Photon by komoot and OpenStreetMap Nominatim turn searches and addresses into map locations. ZIP codes and city names are looked up from U.S. Census data stored on our own server. Other searches, and addresses submitted on the add form, are sent from our server (not your browser) to Photon, and to Nominatim as a fallback for submitted addresses. Your IP address isn't passed along.
• Google, if you choose “Continue with Google,” confirms who you are and tells us your email address and account ID.
• Resend, if you sign in with an email link, delivers that email to you.
• Cloudflare Turnstile, if enabled on a form, checks that you're a person rather than a bot.

Links to restaurants, manufacturers and other sites take you to their pages, which have their own privacy policies.

Removing your information

You can delete your account at any time from your account page. That permanently removes your email, display name, sessions, points and badges. Places you added stay on the map (they help everyone) but are no longer linked to you. You can also ask us to delete your account or anything you submitted, or a claim you made, once our contact details are posted.
